Still Have Questions?
See our complete list of contact information to find the right person to answer your questions.
ANSWERS SECTION:

A: Blogs or Weblogs are online diaries created by people like you and me. Blogging has been around for a few years now, but has more recently become mainstream and popular. Whether in written or visual format, blogs allow people to share ideas, thoughts, and concerns with the community at large as often as they like in an accessible, uncensored forum. Unlike other blogging sites, OnfuegO takes blogging to another level through video blogging or online video-based diaries.

A: It's easy! Simply register and create an account with OnfuegO. Upload QuickTime, Windows Media Player or MPEG video to your personal page each day. Browse, rate and review videos by other members of the OnfuegO community. As a member of OnfuegO, you can view as many videos as you wish. You can browse videos by category or by member, or you can search for video content using simple keywords. One of the best features of OnfuegO is the ability to designate your favorite members and track their videos from your personal page each day, as well. You can also receive feedback on your own work from members of the community, but it's entirely your choice.

A: Membership to OnfuegO is free but limited. We offer three membership tiers that vary in cost and privileges. Paying members are given greater exposure throughout the site and have access to premium features. Please see Membership Privileges for more detailed information about each tier.

A: You may cancel your membership with OnfuegO at any time. You must notify PayPal of your cancellation at the same time as you notify us.

A: Sorry, to upload a video you have to accept our Privacy Policy & Terms of Service and grant us a limited license to promote the video on the site. Since you are under 18, you can't legally enter into a contract. OnfuegO is located in California, and here you have to be 18 years of age to enter into a contract. However, you can authorize someone over 18 to represent you and upload it on your behalf.

A: OnfuegO currently supports QuickTime (.mov), MPEG(.mpg, and .mpeg) and Windows Media Player formats (.wmf). We plan on adding support for other formats later, however we only support these three at the moment.

A: Uploading is easy - go to the Upload Videos page, fill in the required fields, locate the video on your computer, and save it to OnfuegO! You can also add some details about your video to help others search for it, as well as entering email addresses of friends you want tell that you just uploaded a new video. When you upload your video, you can also associate a still image with it - one that represents your unique video (must be a JPEG). If you don't specify a still image, the site will display one of our generic images instead. Please note, if you do not upload a still image when you upload the video, you will NOT be able to upload one later. You will have to delete the video and upload it again with a still image.

A: In order for the end user to watch your video and have a positive experience, the video has to be both compressed and reduce down to a smaller player size. If not, each video can literally take hours to download.

The video that is taken by your digital video camera uses up approximately 200MB for every minute of video (this is not the case with a photo camera that takes movie clips). There is no practical way to send that much data across the Internet in a reasonable amount of time. In addition to making the end viewer get frustrated and go away, it would cost a fortune in bandwidth and storage costs.

After you have finished editing your video, it must then go through the process of compression. Saving your video as a QuickTime or Windows Media Player file performs the compression and gets it ready for OnfuegO. Compressed QuickTime files end in a .MOV extension and Window Media files end in a .WMV extension. Many digital photo cameras and video cameras have the ability to create MPEG movies. These short movies (usually 15 - 30 seconds) are already compressed and can go straight up on OnfuegO site without additional steps. Those files have a .MPG extension.

A: When you are editing you video, you can grab a frame and make a still image that can be shown on your video page. For the majority of editing packages, the process to create a still frame is basically the same. In iMovie, for instance, find the frame you want to use as your still image. Go to the File menu, and Save Frame As. Choose a location to save your file and make sure you save it as a JPEG. That's it!

In Adobe Premier, you have to select the image in the timeline viewer, then go to File > Export > Save as Image. Make sure you save the file as a JPEG.

Another way to create a still image is to use the photo feature of your video camera. Many cameras have the ability to take pictures and save them to tape or to a memory card (or memory stick). Consult your manual for your camera's features.

Back to Top Back to Top

A: We will automatically resize your photo to 320 X 240 from whatever size you send us. This is the ideal size; anything larger will just get compressed. To keep the image from distorting, you should keep it in that ratio (4:3). Other good sizes are 640 X 480, or 1024 X 768. If the image is square or taken as a portrait (480 X 640 or similar), the image will be distorted when we process it to be 320 X 240. Keep in mind that the bigger the image file, the longer it will take to upload and we will process and compress it anyway.

A: No, you have to upload the still at the same time you upload your video. If you want to add a still later, you will have to delete your video and then upload it again. Note: You will lose all your feedback and ratings for that video when you delete it.

A: When you have finished editing your video, you have to perform an extra step to compress it for the Web. You can save it as a QuickTime or Windows Media Player file depending on your editing program, your personal preferences, and the results you get from your program. There is a bit of trial and error here, and you will have to experiment to get good results. This gets easier as you experiment and make a few samples. Hang with it!

You should make a small test video of about 15 seconds to see what format gives you the best results. Try making a few in QuickTime and a few in Windows Media to see what gives you the best results. When completed, a 15 second video should be about 500K or less. Look at the test videos and see which one has the best combination of picture and sound.

Almost all of the editing software tools will allow you to save your video as a QuickTime or Windows Media Player movie. This is generally found in the File menu under Save As or Export. For example, Apple's iMovie has a Share menu item that allows your video to be exported as a QuickTime movie. In the options, select Web. You can also use QuickTime Pro to make QuickTime movies, which is available from Apple.com.

A tool that we really like for compressing movies for the Web is Cleaner by Discreet. It is really easy to use and it is fast, and you can select the type of format you want to create. With that tool, you drag and drop your completed video file into the application, then click a play button to process your video. The output is great quality, and the detailed settings are all taken care of by the application. We will post links to some tools soon.

A: Most digital photo cameras have the ability to create MPEG video in 15 and 30 second clips. These clips can be uploaded directly to OnfuegO, as they are already compressed for the Web. Simply follow the directions that came with your camera for connecting your camera to your computer. You would then follow the same process as uploading a QuickTime or Windows Media Player movie. Simply click the Upload Video link and select the file - don't forget to give it a title. Optionally, you can also specify a still image, create a description, and specify the email addresses of your friends and family that you want to notify about your new video.

A:. When you upload a video, you can specify which category you would like the video to appear in by selecting the appropriate category name in the dropdown. Choose the one that best describes what kind of content or technique your video represents. Other members can then find your video when they browse by the categories in the left navigation.

You can change your video's category at any time on you're My Video Archive page.

A: When you upload a video, you can select the format in which your video was shot. Or, in the case of an animation, you can select the technique or the name of the program you used to create it. If the format for your video does not appear in the list, you can select "Other" - (and feel free to send us feedback with suggestions on additional categories we might add).

The format of your video shows up next to the title of the video on many of the areas of the site. It tells other OnfuegO members what media you use when creating your work. You can change the format of your video on your My Video Archive page.

This is a list of the current formats that you can specify are:
  • Hi8 - high-end analog video recording format
  • Mini DV - most common consumer digital format
  • 8mm - traditional film format with 8mm frames. This is what dad used to make home movies. Still popular and gives that "shot on film" look
  • 16mm - Larger film format with 16mm frames. Popular format for independent films / documentaries / budget films. These are often transferred to digital format for editing on Macs / PCs
  • Digital Camera - video created by a digital still camera that has the ability to create MPEG videos
  • Flash - a tool that let you create interactive content using graphics, sound and video
  • Cell phone video - digital video taken from a cell phone camera
  • DV Cam - professional digital video recording format used by news and production companies
  • 2D/3D Anim - animation created using tools like Lightwave, Motion, 3D Studio Max, etc. Graphical objects are created, then lighting, camera angles, textures, etc., are added to create the desired effects
  • Post-production - special effects created for video and film using tools such as AfterEffects and Shake
  • Other - the infamous catch-all for everything else
A: If you have edited your video using editing software, you should share or export your video as a QuickTime or a Windows Media Player movie. If you made your video with a digital photo camera and as an MPEG, you don't have to worry about this step. You can upload the MPEG directly to OnfuegO.

A: It depends on the size of the file and the type of connection you have to the Internet. 56K dial-up takes about 2 minutes to upload a 1 MB file. DSL will take about 20 seconds to upload a 1 MB file. Cable will take about 10 seconds to upload a 1 MB file. These numbers are all estimates and can vary quite a bit. If you have DSL and are uploading a 5 MB file and a 300K still image, it will take about 2 minutes.

Back to Top Back to Top

A: When your file is completely and successfully transferred to us, we will give you a confirmation that "Your Video Has Been Successfully Uploaded". This can take several minutes, depending on the size of the video (see previous question for more information). We will send you an email when your video has been processed and is ready for viewing, as well. If we encounter an error on our side, we will send you an email to let you know. If this happens, you may have to upload it again.

A: 320 X 240 is a generally a good screen size to upload and that translates to about 3 to 5 MB per minute of video, depending on settings for how many frames per second and the quality of the audio. For video on the Web, unless there is a lot of action, you generally can get away with 15 frames per second. On other videos that involve more motion and come across as extremely choppy, you can increase the frames per second in the configuration settings for QuickTime or Windows Media Player files, up to 30 frames per second. You may have to experiment to get the best combination of quality and small size. Unfortunately, you may have to make a few attempts to get a combination you are happy with. Regarding sound, 22Khz is a good setting for sampling frequency, and comes across nicely without creating files that are excessively large.

MPEG videos that are produced from a digital photo camera are approximately 1.3 MB for 15 seconds of video when shot at 320 x 240. That translates to about 5 MB per minute.

A: Depending on your Membership Privileges, you may be entitled to upload up to 30 videos a week, of up to 30 MB each. Please make sure that you check the size of the video before you upload it to us. Our system is not able to detect the size of the video until it has completely been uploaded to us. If the video is greater than 30 MB, it will generate an error and reject the file, but only after the upload has completed.

A: We have a size limit on videos for several reasons. First, the cost of storage and bandwidth is high and we want to discourage streams of raw footage. Second, a single, large file is harder to view by the end user than a file that has been broken up into 'episodes'. If a viewer has to stop watching the video for some reason and come back later, they have to start from the beginning again. Third, the average user will want to view videos in less than 3 to 8 minute intervals, similar to watching TV. That is what most people are used to. Make it easy to watch, and your fans will appreciate it. Plus, you can keep them coming back for more!

A: If each video is more than 30 MB, we suggest you break the video up in chapters or episodes. Each chapter would be saved as it's own file and the title of the video would reflect the numbering. For example, if you had a 30 minute interview with someone, you would break it into two files using your editing software in a spot that makes sense, and then save each file separately. The first file can be named, "Interview with so and so, Part 1 of 2" and the second file can be named, "Interview with so and so, Part 2 of 2", etc.

A: Videos will generally be available right away - you should see them on the site in less than 5 minutes. The system needs time to distribute the video to the streaming servers, as well as time to process the images and update the various databases. We send you an email once the video is available, or if there was a problem, we send an email to let you know.

A: The most common cause of problems during the upload process is not allowing enough time for the file to upload completely. Keep in mind that we are currently not able to give you any indication how much of the file has been transferred and how much is remaining. Please be patient though, as we have spent considerable time to work out the upload process and make it as foolproof as possible. Our system can recover automatically from many problems that we may come across. However, if you experience difficulties while uploading your video, you should try again. Sometimes you may have to try several times in order for the file to transfer completely.

We have reported some problems using IE on a Mac and suggest that you use a different browser if you have problems. You can try Netscape or another browser to see if that clears up the problems.

A: Once we have received your video, you will receive a confirmation message saying that, "Your video has been uploaded successfully!,- and our system will then put it in the database and put it on the site. If we encounter a problem, we will send you an email telling you there was a problem. If this happens, you will have to upload your video again.

If we don't send you an email telling you there was a problem, the chances are that our system is still processing your video or that it has not been distributed to the streaming servers yet. Please be patient and give the process a few minutes before trying to upload the video again. If the problems persist, you can contact us at support@OnfuegO.com.

A: Yes, you can. Simply go to your personal video archive in My OnfuegO and choose the video you wish to delete. Your video (and all of its ratings and reviews) will be completely removed from the site.

A: Your videos are archived on the site for the life of your account, or until you choose to remove them.

A: The OnfuegO site is designed for 1024 x 768 screen resolution or larger, and is supported by the following browsers: Safari, Mozilla, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and Netscape 7.0 and above. Your browser must support JavaScript in order for some of the site's functionality to work.

To watch the videos, we recommend that you have the QuickTime or Windows Media Player plug-ins properly installed.

A: Most likely, the problem is that you need to download a viewer to allow you to watch the video. Sometimes this problem is evident when you only get sound and the player window is blank.

Another possibility is that the videos on the site are encoded in QuickTime, Windows Media Player and MPEG format. Real Player may not play these movies. QuickTime is available as a free download from Apple for Macintosh and Windows computers and Windows Media Player is available as a free download from Microsoft. Please make sure you have properly installed the latest version.

Windows users: If you are experiencing problems and have already installed QuickTime, your problem may be related to Microsoft Internet Explorer's new plug-in format. More troubleshooting information is available from Apple.

A: OnfuegO allows members to rate videos based on predefined categories. The "Rate this Video" functionality can be found to the right of the video image on the member's personal page. To rate a video, select a rating in the dropdown for each category based on your evaluation of the video, and then click Submit. Your rating will be applied to the video's overall score and it will be displayed when you post reviews or comments to the video, as well. You can only rate a video once, so if you change your rating, the new values will over-write your previous ratings. The ratings are an average number for each category. No special math formulas are applied to the rating system and each category carries the same weight as the others.

A: Very simply, a 1 would be considered poor, where a 10 would be considered excellent. Remember that ratings are fairly subjective and you should think through each category before you give a rating.

A: There are 4 categories for rating videos:
  1. Originality: Does the video present imaginative and creative ways to convey its message?
  2. Technique: Does the video present a logical and effective arrangement of images, pace and continuity in carrying out its stated purpose?
  3. Content/Story: quality of the message or writing in the piece. Does the writing, text, or message set this video apart from the rest?
  4. Overall: How strongly did this entry affect you and elicit an emotional response?
A: OnfuegO welcomes you to submit reviews of other members' videos, and in doing so; you actively become part of the community. After spending time producing the videos and putting them up here, they want to know what you think.

Go to the Write A Review link to the right of the video image on the member's personal page. Enter in your comments and feedback in the form, and then click Submit to post your comments. Your comments will appear immediately.

A: By allowing users to rate your videos and/or leave you written feedback, you actually get to hear what people have to say about your videos. They can ask you questions, tell you what part they liked or disliked, compliment you, congratulate you, or provide tips for improvement. It is one of the most powerful features of a community, and we encourage you to participate in it.

A: During the upload process, you determine how other members may interact with each individual video you post to the site. You can choose to allow other members to rate and/or review your video, do both or neither.

A: The easiest way to do this is to be respectful of other members and don't abuse the privileges of being a member. However, there are quite a few official "rules" for conduct listed in Section 7 Member Conduct of the Terms of Service. Please read them carefully as members who violate the community's code of conduct may have their account revoked.
